Naissance et formation
Né le 16 novembre 1890 à Cudrefin, le musicien et compositeur Aloÿs Fornerod commence ses études musicales en 1899 au Conservatoire de Lausanne avec Max Frommelt pour le violon et Alexandre Denéréaz pour l'harmonie. Il va ensuite étudier à la Schola Cantorum de Paris dans les classes d'Auguste Sérieyx (contrepoint), Nestor Lejeune et Vincent d'Indy (composition). Après cette expérience, Aloÿs Fornerod se rend à Strasbourg où il étudie l'opéra et l'orchestration avec Hans Pfitzner de 1912 à 1913. Il se marie avec Suzanne Dupertuis en 1913 et joue comme violoniste à l'Orchestre symphonique et à l'Orchestre du Théâtre de Lausanne. Il dirige aussi plusieurs chorales et donne des leçons privées. A partir de 1914, Aloÿs Fornerod est critique musical à la Tribune de Lausanne, puis dès 1918, il écrit de nombreux articles pour divers périodiques dont les Feuillets suisses de pédagogie musicale (qui fusionneront avec la Revue musicale Suisse) ainsi que la Revue musicale de Suisse romande.
Parcours de vie
Entre 1922 et 1949, Aloÿs Fornerod enseigne de nombreuses disciplines à l'Institut de Ribaupierre à Lausanne, notamment l'harmonie, le contrepoint, la fugue et l'histoire de la musique. En 1926, il succède à son ami Henri Gagnebin comme professeur d'histoire de la musique au Conservatoire de Lausanne. En plus de l'enseignement, Aloÿs Fornerod dirige quelques ensembles dont le Chœur des Alpes à Montreux et il collabore avec l'ensemble Motet et Madrigal. En 1947, il démissionne du Conservatoire de Lausanne et entre à celui de Fribourg en 1953 où il enseigne l'harmonie et le contrepoint. En 1954, il est admis comme membre à la Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques de Paris et il est nommé directeur du Conservatoire de Fribourg. Il forme et influence plusieurs compositeurs romands dont Jean Apothéloz, Pierre Chatton, Bernard Chenaux, Claude Dubuis, Dante Granato et Oscar Moret. Aloÿs Fornerod commence très tôt à composer, sa première œuvre la Symphonie en fa date de 1915. Parmi ses nombreuses œuvres, citons la Sonate pour violon et piano, le Quatuor pour cordes, le Concerto pour piano, les poèmes symphoniques Le voyage de Printemps et Prométhée enchaîné ainsi que l'opéra-comique Geneviève. En 1958, il obtient le prix pour la musique dramatique de la Société des auteurs et compositeurs suisses.
Fin de vie
Aloÿs Fornerod décède le 8 janvier 1965 à Fribourg. En novembre 1980, le fonds musical Aloÿs Fornerod, qui regroupe les partitions et les archives personnelles du musicien, est créé à la Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire - Lausanne (BCUL). Son catalogue d'œuvres, publié par la BCUL en 1982, inclut plus de 70 numéros d'opus.
